How Often Should You Calibrate Your Gas Monitors?

If your crew carries gas monitors, here's the standard: calibrate every 30 days, and bump test before the first call of the day.

That's not just best practice — OSHA expects your monitors to be maintained per the manufacturer's recommendations, and every major manufacturer calls for monthly calibration and a daily bump test before use.

Why it matters:

- Sensors drift. A monitor that read fine last month can be off today. Calibration corrects it.

- Bump tests catch failures. A 30-second bump test before the shift tells you the sensors actually respond to gas. A monitor that doesn't respond is just a paperweight on your chest.

- Liability. If something goes wrong in a confined space or on a call, "we calibrate monthly and bump test daily" is the answer you want to have.
